Roulette is one of the most iconic casino games in the world—a blend of chance, excitement, and anticipation that peaks the moment the ball begins to spin around the wheel. But how exactly does a game of roulette play out from start to finish when it follows the official rules? Here’s a step-by-step look at how the game unfolds at the table and what every player should know before placing a bet.

The Table and the Wheel – The Setting of the Game

A roulette table consists of two main parts: the wheel and the betting layout. The wheel is divided into numbered pockets that alternate between red and black, plus one or two green pockets marked 0 (and in American roulette, also 00). The betting layout is a green felt surface printed with all the numbers and various betting options.

There are two main versions of the game:

  • European Roulette – features a single zero (37 pockets in total).
  • American Roulette – features both 0 and 00 (38 pockets in total).

The official rules are nearly identical, but the odds and the house edge differ slightly. American roulette, with its extra 00, gives the house a slightly higher advantage.

The Beginning of the Game – Placing Bets

A round begins when the dealer—known as the croupier—announces that the table is open for bets. Players then place their chips on the betting layout, choosing from a wide range of options:

  • Inside bets – wagers placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers (such as a single number, a split between two numbers, or a corner covering four numbers).
  • Outside bets – wagers on broader categories like red/black, odd/even, or high/low numbers.

Each type of bet has its own payout ratio, depending on the probability of winning. The more specific the bet, the higher the payout—but also the greater the risk.

Once all players have placed their bets, the croupier calls out “No more bets” (traditionally in French: Rien ne va plus). From that moment, no one may touch the table or move their chips.

The Spin – Setting the Ball in Motion

After bets are closed, the croupier spins the wheel in one direction and rolls a small white ball in the opposite direction along the rim. The ball bounces and spins, while players watch in suspense.

After a few seconds, the ball slows down and drops into one of the numbered pockets. The pocket where it lands determines the winning number and color for that round.

Announcing the Result

When the ball comes to rest, the croupier announces the winning number and color—for example, “17 black.” A small marker is placed on the winning number on the layout so everyone can clearly see the result.

Next comes the payout phase. All losing bets are cleared from the table, and winning bets are paid according to the official odds. For instance, a correct single-number bet pays 35 to 1, while a red/black or odd/even bet pays even money (1 to 1).

Payouts and the Next Round

Once all winnings have been paid, the croupier removes the marker, and the table is open again for new bets. The game can continue indefinitely, as long as players wish to participate.

In physical casinos, players can buy more chips or cash out their winnings at any time. In online roulette, everything happens automatically, but the rules and flow of the game remain the same.

Special Rules in European Roulette

European roulette includes two special rules that can come into play when the ball lands on 0:

  • La Partage – if you’ve placed an even-money bet (such as red/black) and the ball lands on 0, you get half of your bet back.
  • En Prison – your even-money bet is “imprisoned” for the next spin, giving you a chance to recover it if your next bet wins.

These rules reduce the house edge, making European roulette slightly more favorable for players than the American version.

A Game of Chance and Strategy

While roulette is fundamentally a game of chance, many players use betting systems to manage their wagers—such as the Martingale or Fibonacci strategies. However, it’s important to remember that each spin is independent, and no system can predict or influence the outcome.

The key to enjoying roulette is understanding the rules, knowing the odds, and playing responsibly. In the end, roulette is about the thrill of the spin, the sound of the wheel, and that heart-pounding moment when the ball lands on your number.
